Singapore Airlines has been flying high for decades in the soft-legged, leg-outstretched world of the absolute top-tier aviation elite.
In the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards 2023, it has been named best airline for the fifth time in the 23-year history of the awards.
Just a few weeks after the Singapore flag carrier was named No. 5 in the world by the aviation safety and product rating agency AirlineRatings.com, the announcement was made at a gala on June 20 at the Air and Space Museum at the Paris Air Show.
According to Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted, “Singapore Airlines achieved excellent results in many of the award categories, with the highlight being recognition of their First Class cabin as the World’s Best First Class.” Between September 2022 and May 2023, the UK-based aviation consultancy carried out independent, self-funded customer surveys on more than 325 airlines worldwide in order to gather the results for this year.
The success, according to Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong, was due to the team’s tireless efforts, which included making “many sacrifices to ensure that SIA was ready for the recovery in air travel.” As a result, we have emerged from the pandemic stronger and fitter.
Best in class
This year, Qatar Airways, a seven-time winner of Airline of the Year, came in second, followed by ANA All Nippon Airways in Japan in third, Emirates in fourth, and Japan Airlines in fifth.
In business class, Qatar Airways dominated, winning awards for Best Airline in the Middle East, World’s Best Business Class, World’s Best Business Class Seat, World’s Best Business Class Lounge (the Al Mourjan lounge at Hamad International Airport), and World’s Best Business Class Lounge Dining.
ANA received the award for the highest level of hygiene: It was named World’s Cleanest Carrier for the third year straight, as well as scooping the honor for World’s Best Air terminal Administrations.
The award for the World’s Most Improved Airline went to Kuwait Airways, which recently introduced a complimentary chauffeur service for first and business class passengers. The award for the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline went to AirAsia. Since 2010, it has won the prize annually, so there were no surprises there.
Volotea came out on top in the highly competitive Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe competition, beating Scoot to the title of World’s Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline.
In the new World’s Most Family-Friendly Airline category, which considers things like family seating policies, priority boarding, and amenities for children, Air Canada came out on top.
Cathay Pacific was awarded the title of World’s Best Inflight Entertainment, and Bangkok Airways was once again named the World’s Best Regional Airline.
Sun Country Airlines won the title of Best Low-Cost Airline in North America for the first time, and Alaska Airlines was named North America’s Best Regional Airline. Delta Air Lines received the award for Best Airline Staff Service for the region.
